Oldest Vehicle Brands in Nigeria


Since the inception of vehicle importation into the country, there are special vehicle brands that have registered themselves into the hearts and minds of Nigerians. Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota, Aichi, Japan. In 2017, Toyota’s corporate structure consisted of 364,445 employees worldwide and, as of September 2018, was the sixth-largest company in the world by revenue. The brand was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda on 28th, August 1973 in Japan.

2. Honda

Honda Motor Company, Ltd. is a Japanese public multinational conglomerate corporation primarily known as a manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles, and power equipment. Honda was founded in 1948, September 24th precisely by Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa in Japan.

3. Kia

Kia Motors Corporation, commonly known as Kia Motors., headquartered in Seoul, is South Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer, following the Hyundai Motor Company, with sales of over 3.3 million vehicles in 2015. Kia is a subsidiary of Hyundai. The company was established on the 11th of  December 1944, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

4. Hyundai

The Hyundai Motor Company, commonly known as Hyundai Motors, is a South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Seoul. The company was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-Yung in Seoul, South Korea. Hyundai is the parent company to popular companies like KAI, Hyundai cards, etc.

5. Mercedes Benz

Mercedes-Benz is a german global automobile marque and a division of Daimler AG. Mercedes-Benz is known for luxury vehicles, buses, coaches, ambulances and trucks. The headquarters is in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. It was founded in 1926 by Karl Benz in Stuttgart, Germany and its parent organization is Daimler AG.

Mercedes-Benz is a popular brand in Nigeria in whom is almost every young Nigerian dream.

6. Nissan

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., usually shortened to Nissan, is a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Nishi-Ku, Yokohama. The company sells its cars under the Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun brands with in-house performance tuning products labelled Nismo. It was founded on 26th of December 1933 by Yoshisuke Aikawa, William Gorham, Rokuro Aoyama, and Masujiro Hashimoto.

Nissan has a very strong presence in Nigeria and has been around for a long while.

7. Volkswagen

Volkswagen, shortened to VW, is a German automaker founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front, a Nazi labour union, and headquartered in Wolfsburg. It is the flagship marque of the Volkswagen Group, the largest automaker by worldwide sales in 2016 and 2017.

Volkswagen is one of the vehicles that Nigerians love to ride because it was among the first set of cars Nigerians quickly fell in love at the early stage of car importation into Nigeria.
8. BMW
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, commonly referred to as BMW, is a German multinational company which produces automobiles and motorcycles. The company was founded in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines, which is produced from 1917 until 1918 and again from 1933 to 1945.
The BMW is known for producing classy vehicles such as the BMW M, Rolls-Royce, etc.
 9. LandRover
Land Rover is a British brand of four-wheel drive cars, that exclusively offers premium and luxury sport utility vehicles. This brand was founded by British Leyland in 1978, although was introduced earlier in 1948 and its parent’s organizations are jaguar land rovers and Tata Motors.

10. Chevrolet
Chevrolet colloquially referred to as Chevy and formally the Chevrolet Division of General Motors Company is an American automobile company, it was founded over 100 years ago on November 3, 1911, by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. The owners of this company are the General Motors Company.
The brand has been around for a long time in the Nigerian vehicle market.


11. Ford

Ford Motor Company is an American multinational automaker that has its main headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand and most luxury cars under the Lincoln brand.

Jeep is a brand of American automobile and division of FCA US LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Italian-American corporation Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. it was established in 1943 as a trademark application, while in 1945 the first Jeep branded product was launched.

The jeep brand is very popular among the Nigerian people, as it has even been used in classifying other brand of vehicles that looks like it.
