AFRAA Awards: Ethiopian Airlines emerge best in Africa

Ethiopian Airlines, which was known as Ethiopian Air Line or simply Ethiopian has been in operation since December 1945 beginning fully in April 1946 with domestic flights at first. Ethiopian Airline is known as the largest Aviation winning the 2018 Best Airline in Africa for the 7th time.


The Group was recognized for its exceptional financial performance last week at the 50th high profile African Airline Association Annual General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco. It was awarded by the African Airlines Association(AFRAA).

The CEO of the Airline, Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam said, “…The award attests to the soundness of Ethiopian’s fast, profitable and sustainable growth plan, Vision 2025 and the associated business model.”

He expressed his gratitude to the customers all over the world who give them opportunities to serve them. He attested to the fact that their feedback and support has been pivotal to the Group’s success and improvement in its customer services.

Mr. Tewolde reminded fellow industry partners, stakeholders, and governments of the need to strategize on ways to cooperate in order to capitalize on various opportunities in business and investment.

Air connectivity in Africa will advance to the next level as a result. He also spoke about the need to join strengths in order to actualize a unified African Air Transport market.

In its seventy plus years of operation, Ethiopian – the fastest growing airline in Africa – has become one of the continent’s leading carriers.

The Airline controls a bigger part of the African passenger and cargo network. It operates across five continents and has more than 116 international passenger and cargo destinations utilizing the most modern fleet.

Its fleet with an average age of five years includes ultra-modern and environmentally friendly aircraft like the Airbus A350, Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9, Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 777-200LR with the airline being the first in Africa to own and operate these aircraft.
